Surgical Procedures

We offer both standing surgery and under full general anaesthesia at our Newbiggin clinic.

The most common surgery performed at Newbiggin is colt castrates, which involves a full general anaesthetic performed in our padded knockdown box. Another common procedure is hernia repair, usually performed in foals. We also offer soft palate cautery, which we can now perform without the need for a general anaesthetic. This is done standing under sedation with the use of local anaesthesia and a laser. Our laser can also be used for the removal of cancerous masses such as melanomas and sarcoids.

Surgical Laser

Here at Newbiggin, we have a surgical laser which can be used for a variety of procedures. Most commonly, we use it for the removal of lumps from your horse; this includes sarcoids, melanomas and other cancerous lesions. We now also use it for soft palate cautery with sedation and local anaesthesia.
