Paragon launches Cumbria dog walking guide

We have published a new free guide to some of the best dog walks in Cumbria and the Lakes.

The booklet, which can be downloaded online or collected from one of our centres, contains six specially selected walks which are ideal for dogs, plus lots of useful tips.

‘Come on, let’s go!’ was the idea of vet Graham Lewis who is based at Paragon’s Dalston surgery and lives near Caldbeck in the Northern Fells.

The guide includes two of his own favourite walks as well as four by award-winning outdoor writer, and dog lover, Vivienne Crow.

Graham said: “Cumbria has some of the most beautiful countryside in the world and I love to get out for a walk or run with my dogs Clova and Skye.

“I thought it would be a good idea to create a walking guide specially for dog lovers. Our booklet includes famous Lake District routes as well as some hidden gems which are known and loved by locals. We have included some short easy rambles as well as longer treks so there is something for everyone.

“I have also included important information such as how to keep your dog safe from hazards like heatstroke and blue green algae, and how to behave around livestock.”

The guide also has tips on dog friendly pubs, the location of streams for a canine drink, advice on terrain and parking.  Each walk includes a step-by-step guide to the route.

“Many owners will also be glad to hear we have picked walks with no stiles, so you won’t have to worry about lifting unwilling canines!” said Graham.

“I hope it will inspire everyone to get out and have fun with your dogs and help you get the most out of your walks.”

Four of the walks are written by multi-award-winning author and photographer Vivienne Crow who lives in Carlisle and walks with her terrier Jess. Vivienne has written more than 14 walking guidebooks and is a member of the Outdoor Writers and Photographers Guild.

She said: “A lot of dog owners are nervous about taking their pets out into the countryside, but this guide will make it easier for them. As well as helpful tips and guidance, it contains some great walks.

“I spend a lot of time walking the Cumbrian countryside with my dog Jess - for work and for pleasure - and the four routes I've contributed are very varied, covering woodland, quiet valleys, lakes and open fell. I thoroughly enjoyed researching them - as did Jess!”
