09 Jan 2010 - Let it snow

You know that old saying – ‘Be careful what you wish for’? I’m beginning to think we maybe all wished just a little bit too hard for a White Christmas – because it’s forgetting to stop! I actually do love the snow and I’m quite happy on cold and frosty days – so long as I’ve got plenty of clothes on (at the moment I’m doing a fair impersonation of the Michelin Man).  But the ice has been a total party-pooper, making everything treacherous instead of fun.

Dixie_snow.JPGThat’s particularly true where my horses are concerned. They’ve either been stranded in their stables, or marooned in a field, effectively held prisoner by great stretches of hard packed ice. Heaven help us when the thaw eventually arrives (it will arrive won’t it – somebody reassure me!) because they’ll be kicking up their heels with a vengeance.

My dogs of course are loving the snow. Zara, being older and more experienced is generally fairly respectful of the white stuff, clearly aware that she might lose control of her paws and end up looking foolish in front of the rest of the pack. Fraser, our Shi-Tzu lodger is in permanent danger of disappearing into a snow drift, and his whiskers have turned into icicles because he’s convinced the snow must be hiding interesting titbits and smells.

As for Dixie – she thinks the snow was invented solely for her benefit. She plays in it and pounces on it, shoves her nose into it and rolls over in it, totally oblivious to the fact that it’s freezing cold! In short she thinks it’s wonderful stuff, but then she thinks life in general is pretty wonderful and never hesitates to show it.
