The patient's chest X-ray is shown on the left and shows that the patient has a pneumothorax. This means that air has found it's way into the space between the lungs and the chest wall, causing the lungs to collapse. This usually happens due to an internal leak from the lungs, usually after severe trauma. You can see that the lower part of the chest looks very black - this is the abnormally located air. The upper part of the chest is too white - this is compressed lung tissue displaced upwards by the air. The lungs can't expand and contract properly and the patient will struggle for breath.
