The Paragon Veterinary Group can offer a referral service for medical and surgical management of neoplasia. We have facilities for tumour investigation, diagnosis and treatment, and will be pleased to accept cases for initial diagnostic investigations and work up. We also will accept more problematic cases which have proved resistant to initial medical or surgical management. This service is headed by Gary Lewin ( CertVOphthal CertSAS) who has
post-graduate qualifications in both veterinary ophthalmology and small animal
surgery and Ann Noble. Patients must be referred from the animal's own veterinary surgeon, to whom a full report will be sent.
Cytology and Bone Marrow Sampling
We can perform in-house cytology on fine needle aspirates of tumours to give an initial indication of the most appropriate management of the case. In certain cases bone marrow sampling may be necessary either for tumour diagnosis, staging or as a prognostic indicator. We can take both bone marrow aspirates and core biopsies if required.

Chemotherapy
The continued development of chemotherapeutic agents and protocols presents increased treatment options for certain malignant tumours. By using chemotherapy we can contribute to an improved quality of life and increased survival time for patients with tumours not amenable to surgical excision. Chemotherapy can be a valuable adjunct to surgical excision, particularly where complete excision is not possible, or the nature of the tumour would suggest that metastatic spread is likely.
Many vets will be familiar with traditional chemotherapy protocols such as COP used for lymphoma. While this is still very effective, new protocols have been developed using drugs such as doxorubicin that require less prolonged treatment and with increased possibility of longer term remission. These can also be used as rescue protocols following COP.

Examples of conditions which can be amenable to treatment with chemotherapy
- Lymphoma – possible protocols
include COP, Maddison/Wisconsin,
Doxorubicin
- Other Lymphoproliferative/
Myeloproliferative diseases
- Osteosarcoma
- Mast Cell Tumours
- Multiple Myeloma
- Haemangiosarcoma

Re-constructive surgery
Various techniques have been developed for re-construction following tumour excision.
In cases where defects cannot be closed directly, vascular flaps can be used to create large skin or skin muscle grafts, supplied by a single artery, and that can be rotated into a defect.
In cases where a flap cannot be raised adjacent to a defect, a distant flap can be created, transposed to the defect and grafted on to a local blood supply.
With the facilities that we have for this microvascular surgery, it is theoretically possible to repair almost any body wall defect following tumour excision. |

symphysiotomy or ischio-pubic
reflection)
- Thoracic surgery including lung
lobectomies and chest wall
reconstruction
- Orbitotomies

Counselling of owners
This is an important part of the service as it is vital that any medical or surgical procedures offered meet the requirements of the individual client and that they understand the expected outcomes. It is also important to take into consideration the patient’s overall quality of life. |
