Open Equestrian Evening - Monday 1st March at Rheged Centre near Penrith

Variety was most definitely the spice of life at Paragon’s Open Equestrian Evening at the Rheged Centre near Penrith. Proceedings kicked off with a short DVD showing just a little of the work carried out by Paragon’s equine vets – then Liz Jackson outlined some of the invaluable work done by the British Equine Veterinary Association Trust, both in the UK and overseas.

Paul May brought everyone up to date with the latest breakthrough in the research into Foal Immunodeficiency Syndrome – then handed over to equine surgeon Patrick Pollock from Glasgow University who gave a fascinating presentation on latest research into the horse’s respiratory system.

Anyone who can not only drive cattle and sheep but can also persuade ponies that it’s perfectly okay to go through hoops of fire is bound to have some interesting tales to tell and that certainly proved true of Guest speaker Amanda Saville, Champion carriage driver and founder of the celebrated Chariots of Fire stunt-driving team.  Amanda’s talk was entitled ‘Learning with Horses’ because she believes wholeheartedly that the education process between horse and handler is definitely a two-way street and that we can all learn just as much from our horses as we can teach them.

The evening was sponsored by Merial, the BEVA Trust, Boehringer Ingelheim and Borderway Producations

Laminitis Awareness Workshop -  Wednesday 12th May at Townhead Farm, Newbiggin

On Wednesday 12th May the paragon equine team held a successful Laminitis Awareness Workshop at the Newbiggin premises. This was well attended by clients who were keen to learn more about Laminitis and clients who already had horses and ponies with the disease. We firstly held two talks by Liz Jackson and Paul May about the causes of Laminitis and the treatment and prevention of the disease which were both very informative. Then there were hands-on practical sessions to provide a sound knowledge of the disease including weigh taping and body scoring a different range of horse and pony sizes, finding out what and how to feed the laminitic horse, foot trimming and more.

A big thank you to Lesley Lawman who very kindly lent Lee and also to Fiona Veitch for lending us Virtue both horse and pony took part in our demonstrations and were the perfect helpers in our Laminitic Workshop.
